Lunar Landscape in Vilaflor, Tenerife

Tenerife is indeed a continent in miniature and more. Created following massive volcanic explosions, parts of the island’s landscape are often described as ‘lunar’ and this is especially true in Mount Teide National Park.

It is this dramatic moon-like scenery of bizarre natural rock formations that draws in the crowds of holidaymakers eager to walk on land that was once literally a hotbed of lava.


Wind Cave

Cueva del Viento (Wind Cave) underground complex is the largest lava tube in the European Union and one of the largest in the world. It is the fifth largest in the world behind a series of caves in Hawaii. It was created by lava flows from Pico Viejo, next to Mt. Teide. The cave is located in the town of Icod de los Vinos in the north of the island of Tenerife (Spain).

It extends for more than 17 kilometers long and contains three different levels of passageways, all full of geomorphological phenomena such as lava pits and terraces.

Los Gigantes Cliff

Acantilados de Los Gigantes are vertical cliffs along the western coast of Tenerife. They are vertical walls reaching heights of 500 metres in some places. They are a basaltic geological feature and represent the highest cliffs of the Canaries. In times of the Guanches they were known as the 'Wall of Hell ".

Teno is an old volcanic massif that has weathered the forces of erosion, leaving behind the landscape we see today of large coastal cliffs, levees and vents.

Santa Cruz is the capital (jointly with Las Palmas) of the Canary Islands and capital of the island of Tenerife.

Located in northeast quadrant of Tenerife, about 210 kilometres (130 mi) off the northwestern coast of Africa within the Atlantic Ocean. Between the 1833 territorial division of Spain and 1927 Santa Cruz de Tenerife was the sole capital of the Canary Islands, until 1927 when a decree ordered that the capital of the Canary Islands be shared, as it remains at present.

Los Cristianos is a town in Spain situated on the south coast of the Canary Island of Tenerife. Located in the municipality of Arona between the cone of the mountain Chayofita and the greater mountain Guaza. The town centre is around the Los Cristianos bay, but is rapidly expanding inland with modern development. The town is a popular tourist resort and includes a ferry port.

Vilaflor, with an altitude of 1,400 m, is the highest village of Tenerife.

The Observatorio del Teide (Teide Observatory) is an astronomical observatory on Tenerife operated by the Instituto de Astrofísica de Canarias. Opened in 1964, it became one of the first major international observatories, attracting telescopes from different countries around the world because of the good astronomical seeing conditions.
